Ahhhhh split ends. Those pesky little forks at the ends of your hair ruining your otherwise glamorous looking hair do.
They regrettably make your hair look drab and lifeless, this is the exact opposite of what you want as we come into Summer. We need our mermaid locks to be thick and healthy all the way to the tips for that full beach babe look.
SO! How about we have a little chat about what is causing these split ends and what we can do to minimise them happening anymore than necessary.
Trim it up
Now I, of all people should head these words most, you need to get regular trims to ensure your hair is as healthy as possible at all times.
I know personally if I made a few more trips a year to the hair dresses my hair would be a 1000 times better, but alas clients are calling my name.
All I can do is implore you to try your darnedest to get a trim and keep your hair happy and healthy.
Aim for a trim around every 2-3 months. Your hair will grow and grow just like Rapunzel.
Beat the heat
I think by now we all know that by constantly putting our locks through hot tools can cause a considerable amount of damage to our hair.
This is not to say stop using hot tools, OH DEAR LORD NO!! We just need to be using them wisely.
My first rule, and this a rule and not a tip, you must MUST always apply heat protectant in your hair before using any hot tools.
This protects your hair from any unnecessary heat damage, maintaining the moisture in your locks.
Begin styling your hair to last. Style your hair with your hot tools on day one, and keep that style for two to three days refreshing it with dry shampoo.
This way you get to keep your styled hair, save your hair from split ends AND save time in the mornings when getting ready for work.
Moisturise your hair
One of the best ways to be free from split ends is to treat your hair to a moisture filled hair mask every once in a while.
You can care for your hair as best you can but your hair needs a little moisture kick now and again to help it stay on a good moisture track.
My all time favourite and will always thoroughly recommend is a coconut oil hair mask.
If you are new to hair masking then check out my post on coconut oiling and become a master moisturiser!
Washing your hair
It may come as a shock but there is actually a right and wrong way to wash your hair.
I know it seems like one of those things where you can’t do it wrong, right?
When you shampoo, focus on massaging it into the roots of your hair and scalp and the hair closest to your head.
To condition your hair properly lather the ends of your hair and let it soak in the conditioner for a few minutes.
Then rinse your hair thoroughly with cold water, this closes the hair follicles locking the moisture into the hair.
By simply changing your hair washing routine will create stronger, happier hair, less likely to create split ends.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, please do not brush your wet hair!!!
Your hair is super fragile and incredibly prone to breakage when it’s wet. Using a corse brush at this time would be just like using a hair straightener without heat protectant. Bad.
Use a wide tooth comb to gently de-tangle your hair and avoid unnecessary damage.
Did you know that your is 30% more elasticised when it is wet rather than when it is dry? By combing through with a wide tooth it allows it to stretch as it it naturally would when wet, whilst detangling any pesky knots.
If you can follow through with these easy every day hair care tips you will easily avoid having split ends. By avoiding split ends your hair will be healthier and more likely to grow stronger and more quickly. Follow these tips and you will be well on your way to having luscious looking hair that will be stronger for longer!
